THE Gingerbread Recipe

1 cup molasses
½ cup butter

Cook these to boiling.

Remove from fire. Add 1¾ teaspoons baking soda

Beat well. Add ½ cup sour milk and 1 egg, well beaten.

Mix and sift:

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons ginger
½ teaspoon salt

Add these to the first mixture.

Miss Farmer did not divulge oven temperatures in that edition, but the usual 350° for half an hour should work. As usual, without Miss Farmer having to tell you, grease the pan first and test doneness by sticking a clean knife in and having it come out clean.

Serve with plain sugar sprinkled over or whipped cream. A gingerbread sheet cake is a good place to enjoy stenciling with sugar sprinkled through a paper doily.
